Manhattan Experts with Epidural Steroid Injections, performed by Matthew Spiegel, MD
Overview:
An epidural steroid injection (ESI) aims to treat pain along the spine (back & neck), arms and legs. The injection involves administering a corticosteroid (a type of anti-inflammatory medication) into the epidural space, which is the area between the spinal cord and the nerve roots. The steroid helps to reduce inflammation and swelling in the affected area. ESIs are typically used to treat conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and radicular pain (pain that radiates down the arms or legs). The procedure takes about 5 minutes and is performed with the patient lying on their stomach.
